The family will visit with friends Thursday, May 10, 2018, from 5:00-7:00 pm at the funeral home.
Bitsy was born on March 14, 1936, in Holly Springs, Mississippi. Her family moved to Yazoo City, Mississippi, where she attended Yazoo City High School. While in high school, Bitsy met and fell in love with Henry “Sonny” Bonney, a standout football player. They graduated high school together in 1954. Sonny’s talents sent him to play football at the University of Oklahoma. Bitsy remained in Mississippi where she attended Mississippi State College for Women and Millsaps College. Bitsy was a member of the Chi Omega sorority and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Millsaps in 1958.
The miles of separation throughout college had no impact on their love for one another. Upon graduating from Millsaps, Bitsy moved to Norman, Oklahoma, to be with Sonny. The two were married and, in 1961, they chose to make Duncan, Oklahoma, their home. Bitsy and Sonny raised three children in Duncan - Carolyn, Laura, and Clifton.
Bitsy was an active member of the Duncan community for over 55 years. She attended the First Baptist Church of Duncan where she taught Sunday School for over 20 years. She was a dedicated member of various social clubs including PEO Chapter EE, the Hestian Study Club, and she loved participating in her Mary Martha group at First Methodist Church. She rarely missed her twice weekly hair appointments and often talked about the wonderful friends she made there through the years. In addition to reading and traveling with family and friends, Bitsy was an avid bridge player and was a member in no less than three separate bridge clubs. Bitsy loved her friends and enjoyed so many fun times with them.
Bitsy’s dedication to her various activities was immense, but it paled in comparison to the dedication she had for family. Her favorite times were when the entire family was together. She organized family trips every Spring and Summer to locations such as Palm Springs, California, and Hilton Head, South Carolina. Because of her, the family truly traveled the world together. She made sure they never missed spending Christmas together. She also arranged for the entire family to meet in Dallas for the annual OU/Texas football game for over 40 years. Bitsy was the glue that held the family together.
Bitsy was an incredible wife, mother, and grandmother. She is survived by her loving husband, Henry Bonney, of the home; her daughter Carolyn Bonney Campbell and her husband Jed Campbell; her daughter Laura Bonney Lewis and her husband James Lewis; her son Henry Clifton Bonney, Jr. and his wife Stacy Bonney; grandchildren Claire Bonney Campbell, John Edward Campbell III, Elizabeth Carolyn Lewis, Hannah Jeanette Lewis, Ryan James Lewis, Henry Clifton Bonney III, and Charles Ethan Bonney. She is also survived by her older sister, Carolyn Best.
She was preceded in death by her parents Lloyd Albert Wilkins and Lois Wilkins, and her twin sister Dr. Jeanette “Biggie” Wilkins.
Pallbearers will be Tom McCasland, Jr., Fallis Beall, Tommy Jones, Dr. Robert James Weedn, Mike Weaver, Ron Corley, Carey Murdock, and Dr. David Kendrick.
