It is with joyous hearts that we announce the passing of our mother and grandmother, Valenne Lane Neel, who died Saturday, January 25 at her home with loving support to her last breath.
Services will be 10:00AM Monday February 3, 2020 at the Fisrt Christian Church with Rev Arnold Nelson and Ron Savage officiating. Interment will follow at the Duncan Municipal Cemetery. Services are under the direction of the Don Grantham Funeral Home.
Valenne was born June 26, 1929, to Joseph and Gladys (Gulley) Lane in Oklahoma City, but proudly made Duncan her home for the last 85 years. She graduated with the DHS Class of 1948 and shortly afterward married Melvin E. Neel. They set out to raise Quarter horses and two daughters and were married almost 60 years when Melvin died in 2008.
A perfectionist by nature, Valenne was known for her overzealous work ethic and meticulous organization. She was a wicked list-maker who enjoyed incorporating old lists into new lists, chronicling Things to Do, Bible scriptures, names with phone numbers, phone numbers without names, and tips on how to kill mildew and make your own window cleaner. She was an avid sportswoman of the indigenous Duncan Gopher and during the summers would spend many sleepless nights waiting in ambush in her bedclothes to shoot unsuspecting armadillos.
She did love Square Dancing, birds, caves, gardening, all wildlife, horses, dogs, and cats, but fought at keeping any signs of them out of the house until later in life when she finally allowed herself the joys of sleeping with her beloved cat. Her interior design tastes leaned heavily into glass chandeliers, artificial flowers, the ubiquitous Cool Whip "Tupperware" bowls, and you could never find a sharp knife with which to cook because somehow "knife-sharpening" missed getting on a list.
A loyal servant of God, Valenne was deeply proud of her family who survives her: Daughter Marsha Diane Long (David J.) and their children Bethany Long von Gulbrantz (Scott), Adam Neel Long (Alexis), and Audrey Long Jones (Matt). Daughter Debra Neel and her daughter, Dara Michelle Cupp-Davulcu. Ten great-grandchildren: Chelsea Hana Davulcu, Alexis Marie Long, Adrian Richard Long, Ashtyn Quinn Jones, Logan von Gulbrantz, Paige von Gulbrantz, Nathan Alexander Long, Michelle Katherine Long, Tyson Gabriel Long, and Brandon Neel Long.
The family wishes to thank the following for their special efforts and support during her final weeks: Eric Davis, Lisa Yancy, Jessica Sikes, Rhonda Sheppard, Brande Fielding, Jody Lyke, Gregston's Nursing Home (Dana, Kayla), Chisholm Trail Hospice (Carolyn), and Around the Clock's Amazing Caregivers: Dana, Cary, Amanda, Brandi, Suzanne, and Andrea.
