Phil H. Whetsell was born July 2, 1950 in Duncan, Oklahoma to Sherman H. Whetsell and Ruby (Coker) Whetsell. Phil attended Duncan High School and was a member of the Duncan Marching Band before graduating in the Class of 1968. He attended Cameron University, was a member of the ROTC, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business in 1973.
Upon graduation, Phil worked as an Assistant Administrator for Duncan Regional Hospital. In 1974 Phil began his career in the oilfields of Oklahoma. He worked as a mechanic for Getty, Skelly and Texaco Oil Companies before retiring in 2000. Phil wasn’t ready to settle down just yet, using his favorite hobby of browsing around for antiques at flea markets. He would have fun buying and selling his antique finds and restoring a few. Then, still not fully retired Phil would get his CLEET certification where he worked as a surveillance and security officer. He would also have a second family with his career working at the local Ace Hardware store. In 2016, Phil finally did decide it was time to retire and spend his time with his loving family and his beloved dog, Jake.
He was a member of the Duncan Masonic Lodge since 1972 and was a faithful and active member of Bethel Assembly of God in Duncan. He loved his church family.
Phil is survived by his two daughters, Crystal Motley and her husband Mark of Norman, Oklahoma and Jennifer Clark and her husband Ryan of Duncan; his sister, Lisa Mooney and her husband Lysle of Duncan; two grandchildren, Coltlyn Clark and Madison Motley; his niece, Kristen Mooney Standifer and husband Terrill Standifer of Arkansas and their two children Ruby Grace and Noah; his nephew, Caleb Mooney of Duncan; and many friends.
In lieu of flowers the family has asked that memorial donations be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children Attn: Office of Development 2900 N. Rocky Point Dr. Tampa, FL 33607.
