Odell Byford was born August 18, 1928, in Stephens County near Comanche, the son of Florence Nora Mobley and James Monroe Byford, Jr..
The fourth of eight children, he attended Stoner and Tucker Elementary Schools, then went on to graduate from Comanche High School where he lettered on the Comanche football team. He graduated from high school in 1945 when he was 16 years old.
As a child of the Depression, he started picking cotton as soon as he was strong enough to drag a cotton sack. In 1947, he began working as a machinist for the Halliburton Oil Well Cementing Company.
On May 24, 1947, Odell married Peggy Ann Headrick. They had three children. They divorced in 1979.
About 1973, after some 26 years, Odell left Halliburton to open his own machine shop. However, when the oil industry crashed in the early 80's, he lost everything. With much hard work, enterprise, ingenuity and some plain luck, he began a new buisiness of making boxes. With Carolyn Matlock, he created the Southern Box Company. The business started on South 81 Highway but eventually, Odell and Carolyn were able to move their store to Duncan's Main Street. They married in the mid-eighties. In 1989, Carolyn and Odell received the Duncan Chamber of Commerce Small Business Persons of the Year, and, later, the Southwest Oklahoma Small Business award. They sold the business and retired about 2004. Carolyn Byford died in April, 2017.
He was predeceased by his parents, Florence and Monroe Byford; two sisters, Wanda Byford Callandar and Oleta Byford Wright; three brothers: Troy Byford, Roy Byford, and F.M. Byford.
Survivors include two sisters: Shirley Byford Reed and Lestine Byford Sullaway Fowler.
Odell's very special friend and loving companion, Lorene Patterson of Duncan, and her family, also survive him.
Odell's children are: Diana Byford Glover and husband Walter of Katy, TX; Steven and Cindy Eazor Byford of Coppell, TX; and Kelly and Jayne Livingston Byford of Dallas, TX.
