It is with great sadness that the family of Joseph Peter Romano announce his passing at the age of 89. Joe went to be with his Lord and Father peacefully at his home in Duncan, Oklahoma on the morning of Saturday, August 3, 2019 after a long illness.
Joe was born on May 5, 1930 in Sault Saint Marie, Michigan to John W. and Lillian Ann Romano. Joe loved his family. He fell in love and married Ona Fay Brown on February 14, 1974 in Salton, Texas. Together they had five children and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a stepson, Wayne Harrell, great granddaughter, Harper Romano and sisters, Amelia LaTour, Frances Cook, Evangeline Sharpe, Wanda Monroe, Angeline Schuler, Teresa Gugin, Cecilia MacArthur, and Wilma Hoath. He is survived by his wife, Fay Romano; his children and their spouses; John and Brenda Romano, Sharon and Dave Brennan, Jim and Rosie Romano and Dorothy and Jerry Moore; his sister, Dolores Normandin; grandchildren; Michael and Valerie Brennan, Adam and Molly Brennan, Joshua and Ashley Romano, Taylor Romano, Jimmy and Tammy Ward, Terri Moore, Michelle Harrell,Shae and Dan Gilbert; ten great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. Joe was a 29 year veteran of the United States Army reaching the rank of Chief Warrant Officer class 4. He had tours of duty in Japan, Korea, Germany, Thailand, and Vietnam. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Legion of Merit, Army Commendation and Korean War Medals as, well as many other medals and service ribbons. After his military career, he worked for the Association of South Central Oklahoma Governments before a second career at the Red River Vo-tech, which culminated with years of representation on the Vo-Tech School Board.
Joe was a good and kind man who was a respected member of the community of Duncan, Oklahoma. He was a lifelong Christian and a lifetime member of the Lakeside Baptist Church. He was a great father and grandfather and a loving husband. He put up a long and hard fight during his illness, but is hurting no more. He will be dearly missed by his family and loved ones.
Funeral services will be held at Don Grantham Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, August 7, 2019 at 11:30 AM. Interment will follow at 2:00 PM Wednesday at Fort Sill National Cemetery in Elgin, OK with military honors provided by the US Army Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Pallbearers will be Michael Brennan, Adam Brennan, Josh Romano, Jimmy Ward, Erik Ward and Jeff Ward. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Lakeside Baptist Church 4910 Clearcreek Rd Marlow, Oklahoma 73055.
