John Austin Watkins

April 3, 1931 ~ October 8, 2018 (age 87)

John A. Watkins, 87, of Duncan, Oklahoma passed away Monday October 8, 2018, at the Lawton/Ft. Sill Veterans Center after a brief illness.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 pm, Thursday, October 11 at the First Christian Church in Duncan with the Rev. Arnold Nelson officiating. Services are under the direction of the Don Grantham Funeral Home.
The family will visit with friends at the funeral home Wednesday, October 10 from 5:00 -7:00pm.
John was born on April 3, 1931 to O.R. Watkins and Ruby Nite Watkins at Four Mile, Oklahoma. He was raised by his grandparents, J.C. and Annie Nite and his Aunts and Uncles whom he considered his brothers and sisters, Taz, Vedas, Myrtle, Ethel, Maxine, Ruth, W.C. and John Calvin Nite all of whom predeceased him.
He married the love of his life, Jane Harmeyer, on May 12, 1951, in Bray, OK. He began work for Schlumberger shortly thereafter and remained there for the next 30 years. During the Korean conflict he served four years in the United States Navy as a Hospital Corpsman. Following his retirement from Schlumberger he spent another twenty-eight years working for various oilfield perforating companies.
John joined the Duncan Masonic Lodge in 1960, was promoted to Master Mason and in 2010 became a member of the Scottish Rite. His favorite pastimes were watching his children and grandchildren play sports. He was a common site at Duncan Demon football, baseball and basketball games.
He is survived by wife of the home, Jane Watkins, and his children, Jennifer Watkins, Jay B. Watkins and wife, Chris, Joe Watkins and wife, Sharla and one brother, Mike Fitzgerald and wife, Karen. Eight grandchildren, Courtney, Kayla, Kara, Addie, Dane, Austin, Dillon and Taylor and one great grandchild, Miller Mae. He is also survived by his best friend of 80 years, Johnie Byron Wright of Edmond, OK.
Pall bearers will be Dane Syme, Austin Syme, Mike Kreiger, Kyle Harmeyer, Ronnie Cox, and Wray Franks.
