Dr. Jiten Chatterji passed away on November 21st, 2019 in Dallas, Texas. He was 86 years old.
Dr. Chatterji was born in India in 1933. After earning his B.S. and M.S. in chemistry at the University of Patna in India, he was accepted to the University of Wyoming for doctoral studies. He moved to Laramie, Wyoming in 1960. While in Laramie, he met Ms. Iris (“Peggy”) Plunkett of Saratoga, Wyoming. Dr. Chatterji was awarded his doctorate in chemistry in June 1967, and accepted a position with Halliburton Energy Services in Duncan, Oklahoma. Jiten and Peggy were married in Fort Collins, Colorado in June 1967. Their oldest son, Robi, was born in Duncan in 1968 and their youngest son, Mark, was born in Duncan in 1969.
During his 43 years with Halliburton, Dr. Chatterji became one of the most prolific inventors of his generation, eventually being issued 255 patents by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. His achievements in science and industry were widely recognized, including the Houston Intellectual Property Law Association’s Outstanding Inventor Award in 2001; the Oklahoma Bar Association’s Innovator of the Year in 2003; and the American Chemical Society’s Oklahoma Chemist Award in 2010. Dr. Chatterji retired from Halliburton in 2010.
Dr. Chatterji is survived by his wife, two sons, and four grand-daughters.
A memorial service honoring Dr. Jiten Chatterji will be held on December 14th 2019 at 2pm at the Don Grantham Funeral Home Chapel in Duncan, Oklahoma.
