Honor L. Vaughn
March 30, 1937 - April 12, 2020
Honor L. Vaughn, 83 , a longtime Duncan resident, passed away on Sunday, April 12, 2020, surrounded by loving hands and hearts.
She was born on March 30, 1937 to Larkin P. And Lillie (Carter) Howell.
Honor began living on her own at 14 years of age, paying for a room at a boarding house and working in an ice cream parlor. She graduated from Eufaula High School and took a job as a court reporter.
She married Frank Ingold Vaughn on December 4, 1953. They had four children by the time they moved to Duncan in 1961 and would have two more as time went on.
Honor’s love of children led her to a job at the First Christian Church day care center in 1967, and she became the Director there in 1969. While serving in this role, she spearheaded a drive to change some of the standards in a bill that was pending in Congress. When she retired from her post in 1976, she said “I’m ready to stay home and take care of my family and maybe do some things in the community.”
(Maybe, she said.)
Although she worked off and on for Duncan Regional Hospital and the Bernina Sewing Center, volunteering became her way of life. She spent many years dedicating her time to improving the quality of life for individuals, groups and Duncan organizations.
She was very involved in Toy Shop, which benefits hundreds of families for their children each Christmas season. She also volunteered and raised funds for the Duncan High School Robotics club. She was a key volunteer in keeping Christians Concerned operation’s running and served on its Board of Directors. She was a past President of Christian Women’s Fellowship. She coordinated the volunteers who rang bells for the Salvation Army during Christmas. She was also associated with the Gleaners Oklahoma Community Education (OHCE), The United Way, The Compassion Center, and Church Women United. She was an active member of First Christian Church, where she served for a time on the church Board and was a Deacon.
She loved Duncan and the people there. She was a true Servant Leader, and was very deserving of her award in 2011 from the Duncan Chamber of Commerce, when she was voted Woman of the Year.
Honor is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her son, Dewayne Frank Vaughn; her sister, Lois Kirk and her nephew, Kenneth Thomas.
She is survived by her brother, Larkin P. Howell, ll; her children, Denise Clark (AJ), of Duncan; Linda Susan Haley(Joe), of Oklahoma City; Teresa Sprague (Stephen), of Bedford, Texas; Alicia Vaughn(Staci), of Oklahoma City; Regina Vaughn of The Woodlands, Texas; adopted-daughter from across the street Kimberly Richey; daughter-in-law Lori Vaughn of Rolla Missouri; grandchildren, Robert Vaughn Dean(Jessica), Kristen Vaughn, Brian Clark, Mason Vaughn(Nicole), Joe Haley(Katie), Matthew Sprague; great-grandchildren Vaughn Dean-Woods and Mary Dean; niece Doris Nabors(Jon); niece Shirley Roth; great-nephew Smitty Nabors(Randi), and great-niece Jennifer Spencer(Micah).
Honorary pallbearers will be her grandchildren.
A private burial service will be held at 2 pm on Friday April 17th, 2020 at Bower Cemetery, Bower Oklahoma with Rev. Arnold Nelson Jr. officiating. Arrangements are under the care of Don Grantham Funeral Home of Duncan.
