Gladys Newton Taylor, 90, of Duncan, OK, passed away Sunday, March 4, 2018, surrounded by her children.
A Graveside Service will be held at 10:30am Saturday, March 10, 2018 at Duncan Municipal Cemetery, presided by the Rev. Matt Meinke of First Presbyterian Church. Services are under the direction of Don Grantham Funeral. The family will visit with friends at the funeral home Friday, March 9th 5:00 to 7:00pm
Gladys Mae Newton was born November 25, 1927 to Willard J. and Veronia Newton. She was the second of four children, with older sister Imogene, and younger brothers Kenneth and John (J.W.). Gladys graduated Duncan High School in 1946, and attended El Camino College in Inglewood, California, and Cameron Junior College in Lawton, OK.
Gladys married the love of her life, Lloyd Clinton Taylor, in Duncan, OK in 1951. They were blessed with three children, David Lanson, Cydney Jane, and John Newton Taylor. Lloyd’s career as an engineer with Dowell led their family on a journey throughout the United States, with Gladys providing a loving home to her husband and children throughout. She spent their early years devoted to raising her children, and eventually earned her BA in English and Education from Morris Harvey College in Charleston, West Virginia, in 1967.
Gladys taught High School English in Charleston, West Virginia and Evansville, Indiana, and after moving back to her hometown of Duncan upon Lloyd’s retirement. Gladys taught English at Duncan Junior High School from 1979 to 1988. She was a yearbook sponsor in all of these schools.
Gladys kept busy in her community, and was a volunteer worker for Christians concerned, Cub Scouts, and the Duncan Toy Shop. Gladys was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Duncan. She taught Vacation Bible School and Sunday School from pre-kindergarten to adults. Also within the Church, she served on the Mission Committee and Scholarship Committee, served as a Circle Bible moderator, secretary and treasurer of the Women’s Council and as church librarian for a number of years. She was the recipient of the Honorary Life Membership Award from the Presbyterian Women in 2002.
Gladys was preceded in death by her husband Lloyd in 2008; her parents; her sister Imogene Kearney; brother Kenneth “Budge” Newton and his wife Loretta; and brother John “J.W.” Newton.
She is survived by her three children, David Lanson Taylor and his wife Gretchen of Duncan, OK; Cydney Jane Taylor Nickles and her husband Benton, of Duncan, OK; and John Newton Taylor and his wife Becky of Tallahassee, Florida. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren: Annie Taylor Winslow, Kathleen Taylor, Laura Taylor, Julia Taylor, and Jessica Taylor; Robert Nickles, Jeffrey Nickles, and Melissa Nickles Davidson; Harrison Taylor, Grant Taylor, and Anastasia Taylor; two great-granddaughters, Aviana Taylor and Sophie Davidson; sister-in-law Margie Newton, brother-in-law Norman Kearney, and numerous beloved nephews and nieces.
