Fluff was born October 2, 1932, in Duncan, to John C. Dixon and Myrtis Viola Kennedy. She lived in Duncan her entire life, the community that she loved so much. Her heart was huge, with room for everyone, and she lived a long, large life that touched many others. In this short space it would be impossible to try to name all the people she loved and cherished, or tell her life story, without many glaring omissions, so no such attempt will be made. What follows is merely a glimpse of her life.
Fluff’s life was filled with her family and many, many friends, her church and faith, her work, her love of music, dance, and theatre, and her endless capacity to give to others.
Educated in Duncan schools, Fluff’s interest in music led to her first job in a record store. She later went to work for Haliburton, greeting and welcoming visitors for 34 years. She then became an agent with Kay’s Real Estate, where she didn’t offer “property for sale,” but placed ads on behalf of “attractive homes seeking new owners.” Early on, Fluff became involved with Duncan Little Theater, and it became a love affair that lasted the rest of her life. She relished the roles she played on stage, but also encouraged others and helped wherever needed. Beginning in 1991, Fluff became a volunteer at Duncan Regional Hospital, a role she continued until her death, and for her work there was named “Favorite Volunteer” three times. Always a large part of her life,
Fluff spent many hours in the fellowship of West Side Christian Church, where she sang in the choir, and served as Deacon, Elder and Sunday School Teacher.
Fluff was preceded in death by her parents; by her late husband Merlyn H. “Smitty” Smith; and by her half-sister, Joyce Melba Rose, who she discovered late in life thanks to Joyce’s son, James D. Rose, who survives.
She is survived by Smitty’s son, her stepson, David Allan Smith and wife, Susan K. Hoermann, and Susan’s daughter Cindy and husband Tim Dedear, and their children Laura and Katherine. Fluff is also survived by her cousin, Emily Elam Williams, and Emily’s children, Karen Francis Gay, Mike Williams, and Gary Don Williams; by Bruce Elam and Tara Ley, children of Fluff’s late cousin, Theodore Richard “Ted” Elam; and by many other cousins, nieces and nephews.
Among the many others left to mourn her are her “sweetie,” Grady Underwood; and her friends, Dwayne Brittain and Anita Johns.
Pallbearers for the service will be: Bill Crowdis, Blaise Hackler, Randy Rosine, Todd Jones, Clint Carman, Jerry Harwell. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Steve Smith; the congregation of West Side Christian Church.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be sent to: Chisholm Trail Hospice, P.O. Box 2000, Duncan, Oklahoma 73534, or West Side Christian Church, 1801 W Beech Ave., Duncan, Oklahoma 73533
