Audrey Laverne “Fern” Koonce passed peacefully on Friday, January 10, 2020.
Fern was born to Malissia and Roy Griffith on March 13, 1929 in Dixie, Oklahoma. She met the love of her life, Glenn Koonce, in Oklahoma, where he was stationed at Fort Sill and she worked at a movie theater box office. Fern and Glenn were wed November, 7, 1946 and made their home in Duncan, Oklahoma. The couple had four children: Bobby Koonce, Karon Craig, Randy Koonce, and Stevie Koonce. Fern was a wonderful grandmother to her grandchildren: Jennifer Borski, Stephanie Koonce, Brandon Craig, Melissa Craig, Eric Matheny, Shelby Brown, and Nathan Urban; and many adoring great grandchildren. She was lovingly known as Mamaw to almost everyone she knew.
Fern is survived by her sister Mildred Griffith of Duncan; her son Randy of Sayre; her son-in-law Ron Craig and daughter-in-law Lynda Koonce, both of Duncan; her grandchildren, great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews; and many other family members who loved her dearly.
Fern did many things during her 90 years of life. She was a gifted seamstress and would often participate in craft shows with her sisters. She operated a daycare and was “Mamaw Fern” to many lucky children in the Duncan area. Fern was a wonderful cook and loved to make big meals and have her family join her. She also loved music, going on road trips, camping, fishing, playing games, and anything else she could do to spend quality time enjoying her family and loved ones. Her sassy, loving, motherly spirit will be missed by all who knew her.
Although those left behind will deeply mourn the loss of her earthly presence, we rejoice for her return to her Heavenly home where she is reunited with her children: Bobby, Karon, and Stevie; grandson, Bobby Brian and great grandson, Miles, her parents, and her many siblings.
The family would like to thank Chisholm Trail Assisted Living and staff for providing such wonderful and loving care of both Fern and her husband, Glenn, during their time there, and Elara Hospice for their services.
A family memorial service will be held at The Well in Duncan on Saturday, January 18, at 1 p.m. Cremation arrangements were provided by Don Grantham Funeral Home.
