Erna Elisabeth Gillis

July 1, 1921 ~ March 3, 2019 (age 97)

Erna Elisabeth Liehr Zeibart Gillis (Omi), passed away Sunday March 3, 2019 in Duncan, Oklahoma at the age of 97.

Erna was born July 1, 1921 to Joseph and Maria Liehr in Breslau, Germany. She married Clyde B. Gillis in Litchenfels, Germany on August 9, 1946 while he was serving on occupation duty following World War II. He preceded her in death on July 23, 2007 after almost 61 years of marriage.
She was a homemaker and Army wife to Clyde for over 29 years. Performing all the duties expected of the wife of a Command Sgt. Maj. She and the family accompanied Clyde from Ft. Dix, NJ to Ft. Bragg, NC to Okinawa, to Ft. Sill, OK, to Germany then back to Ft. Sill where he retired after 35 years of military service. She always said, "Home is where you make it.". During Clyde's unaccompanied tours to Korea and Vietnam, Erna worked as a nurses' aid at Memorial Hospital caring for the newborn babies. She worked nights and loved to sing to those crying babies as she rocked them to sleep.
Erna was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Lodge No. 39 for over 54 years. She was an excellent seamstress who could design and make her own clothes growing up. She also sewed for her daughter throughout her school years.
After Clyde retired from the military, they traveled extensively, returning on numerous occasions to Germany to visit her family and friends. They actually explored much of Europe including England, France, Italy, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, and Baltic countries but also the Panama Canal and Hawaii. They shared their love of traveling with their children and grandchildren. Erna grew up with the snow and cold winters of Germany, but her passion was cruising where it was warm like the Caribbean and Mediterranean countries.

Gillis, Jr. and wife Karin of Apex, NC; a brother-in-law, Herman Gillis and wife Elsie of Statesville, NC; six grandchildren: Michael G.
