With sadness, the Smith family announces the passing of their patriarch, Bobby Lee Smith, 90, Sunday, November 24, 2019. He was surrounded by his wife and children.
He was born in Pruitt City, Oklahoma, April 9, 1929, to Melvin and Florence Riddle Smith. At 17, he hopped a train to Oklahoma City and joined the Navy to “See the World!” During his 30 year Naval Career, he served in: China, Japan, Korea, Florida, California, Virginia, the Mediterranean, Australia, Puerto Rico and Cuba. He also served two Tours in Vietnam with Tugmaster Certification. While stationed in Puerto Rico, he met his wife of 67 years, Margarita Medina, whom he married August 10, 1952.
Bob was awarded: Good Conduct Medals (five), the China Service Medal, National Defense Service Medals (Korea & Vietnam), the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Cuba), the Navy Expeditionary Medal (Cuba), the Occupation Service Medal (Japan), Republic of Vietnam Service Medals (two) and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
Bob retired as a Boatswain’s Mate Petty Officer 1st Class, June 1, 1970, in St. Petersburg, Florida where he become a Seamanship Instructor at Admiral Farragut Academy. After becoming empty nesters, Bob and Margot returned to his beloved Oklahoma. He worked at Norman’s Griffin Memorial Hospital, retiring as Carpenter Shop Supervisor and was awarded with the State of Oklahoma Citation.
Bob and Margot settled in Duncan to fish and to spoil their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Bob especially looked forward to the Grady Reunions and our annual family vacations on Oklahoma’s lakes. This year, for the first time, his entire family came together to celebrate his 90th birthday.
Bob is survived by his wife, Margot, their 3 children: Laverne Potter, her husband Greg, their children William and Lynlee, her husband Sebastian and their children Piper and Kira; Glenda Dris, her son Michael and his fiancée Julia; and Robert Smith, his wife Rene, their children Adam, his wife Eva, their children Emily and Ayden; and Amber, her children Bryce, Cody, Jacob, Elianna and Pierce. Of ten siblings, he is survived by Patsy Tillery.
Services will be held at the Ft. Sill National Cemetery, Friday, December 20, 2019 at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation, in Bob’s name, to the Stephens County Honor Guard (theschg.com).
Bob will be remembered for his generosity, ready smile, gentle way with animals, and his strong sense of duty to Family and Country.
