Alfred Sam Stovall (95) of Duncan died peacefully Thursday, December 27, at the Oklahoma Veteran's Center in Norman.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm Wednesday January 2, 2019 at the Don Grantham Funeral Home Chapel, Duncan, with Rev. Randy Southerland officiating. Interment will follow at the Duncan Municipal Cemetery.
The family will visit with friends at the funeral home Sunday, December 30 from 4:00 to 6:00pm.
Sam was born on August 29, 1923, in Albany, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents Lillie and Robert, his 13 brothers and sisters, and his beloved daughter Sherry Nan. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Nancy Ann Stovall; son Michael Sam Stovall and wife Nery (Oklahoma City); and son Robert Jack Stovall, wife Juna, and grandchildren Caleb, Jessa and Hayden Stovall (Norman).
Sam spent most of his life serving others and improving his corner of the world. He grew up in Abilene, Texas, helping out on his parent's farm, and later, attending Abilene Christian University, where he met his beloved wife, Nancy. Sam was part of the Greatest Generation, proudly serving in World War II as a tail gunner in the U.S. Air Force's 820th Bombardment Squadron. After the war, he lived in Lorraine, Texas, and served as the high school's head basketball coach. Later, he moved his family to San Marcos, Texas, where he served as a high school principal and basketball coach. He continued his career in public education in Duncan, Oklahoma, as a high school principal and an assistant superintendent for the Duncan Public Schools.
Sam had deep Christian roots and attended church at Chisholm Trail Church of Christ.
Sam was proud of his country, his family and his vocation in public education. He offered genuine encouragement and support to everyone around him, and he always enjoyed a good joke.
